Anti-Snap vs Anti-Bump vs Anti-Pick | Which Threat Is Real

Lock packaging has a habit of listing every attack a cylinder resists, as if all three threats are equally likely to show up at your door on a Tuesday night. They're not. Snap is far more common than bump in the UK, and pick is rarer still. If you don't know that going in, you'll either buy on marketing copy or spend more than you need to. So let's rank the threats properly, then decide what you actually need.

The Three Attacks, Briefly

Before ranking, it's worth being clear on what each term means, because they're genuinely different methods.

Snapping. A burglar uses a pair of pliers or grips to snap the euro cylinder at a weak point near the cam. Once the front section breaks off, the lock mechanism is exposed and can be turned with a screwdriver. Fast, quiet, requires no skill. You can watch a poorly made cylinder get opened this way in under a minute.

Bumping. A specially cut "bump key" is inserted into the lock and struck sharply. The impact briefly bounces the driver pins above the shear line, and a quick turn at that exact moment opens the lock. Effective against standard pin tumbler cylinders. Requires a bit of feel and practice, though it's not hard to learn.

Picking. Using picks and a tension wrench to manually lift each pin to the shear line in sequence. More skill-dependent than bumping. Takes longer. Quiet, but slower than snapping.

How Common Is Each in UK Burglaries?

This is the part that changes the conversation.

The Home Office, police forces, and the insurance industry have all noted that cylinder snapping accounts for a significant proportion of lock-cylinder attacks on domestic properties in England. Thames Valley Police, which covers our patch from Wokingham through RG40 and RG41, has historically cited snapping as a dominant method in opportunistic residential burglaries. It's fast, it works on the cheap cylinders fitted to most uPVC door multipoints, and the tools are ordinary.

Bumping appears far less frequently in UK crime statistics. It's used. It's not a myth. But it's not the method a casual opportunist reaches for when they've got thirty seconds outside a house in Emmbrook at midnight.

Picking is the least common of the three in residential break-ins. It's the method of patient, skilled attackers. Most UK residential burglars are not patient or skilled. They're opportunistic, and they want to be inside in under two minutes.

This doesn't mean bump and pick resistance are worthless. It means your money should go towards snap protection first.

What the Standards Actually Test

This is where the specs matter.

The takeaway: if you buy a TS007 3-star cylinder or an SS312 Diamond-rated cylinder, you're covered for all three attacks by definition. The standard won't pass unless the cylinder resists snapping, bumping, and picking for the required duration. You don't need to cross-check the box for each claim individually.

A 1-star cylinder gives you nothing on attack resistance. It's tested for key security (key copies, key identification). Fine as part of a 3-star combination where a hardened steel guard takes the snap load, but not on its own.

The Cylinders Worth Fitting in Wokingham

For a typical semi-detached on Woosehill, a terrace in Norreys, or a rental in Winnersh, I'd normally be looking at one of these:

• Avocet ABS (TS007 3-star), around £35 to £50 supply only. Solid everyday choice for uPVC doors with multipoint locks.
• Ultion (Sold Secure Diamond, TS007 3-star), around £55 to £75 supply only. The internal deadlocking mechanism means even a snapped cylinder can't be turned by a screwdriver. Genuinely clever engineering.
• Mul-T-Lock MT5+ (SS312 Diamond), £80 to £120 supply only. Sidebar locking, high pick resistance, patented key. More common in commercial premises or higher-value properties in areas like Finchampstead or the larger detached houses around Keephatch.
• ERA Fortress (TS007 3-star), around £30 to £45 supply only. Budget-friendly, good snap protection, slightly less pick-resistant than Ultion at the top of the pin stack.

Fitted prices vary depending on the cylinder size and whether your door needs any adjustment, but you're typically looking at £80 to £150 all-in from a Wokingham locksmith for a cylinder swap on a standard uPVC door.

So Which Do You Actually Need?

Here's where I'll commit to an answer instead of listing every caveat.

For most Wokingham homes with uPVC doors: snap resistance is non-negotiable, bump and pick are a bonus. Get a TS007 3-star cylinder. You'll get all three protections in one product, and you won't be paying extra just to tick the bump box.

If your door is timber with a mortice lock: you're less exposed to snapping (mortice locks don't use euro cylinders). Make sure the mortice is BS3621 or BS8621, five-lever, anti-pick. Bump isn't really relevant to lever mortice locks.

If you're a landlord with multiple properties in RG40 or RG41: standardise on one TS007 3-star cylinder across your portfolio. The key control you get from a patented profile like Ultion also helps, since tenants can't copy the key at the local hardware shop.

The one exception: if you're in a street that's had recent burglaries involving more sophisticated methods (your local Neighbourhood Watch or Thames Valley Police alert will tell you), or you're protecting a commercial premises in Bracknell or Crowthorne with real assets inside, go to SS312 Diamond. The cost difference between TS007 3-star and SS312 is maybe £30 to £50 per cylinder. For most homes, it's not where the money is best spent. Better to also check your door hardware, hinges, and strike plate aren't the weakest link.

A cylinder rated for all three attacks, fitted to a door with a collapsing frame, is still a poor security outcome. The cylinder won't snap but the door will flex open. That's a different conversation, but worth keeping in mind.
