Cheap vs Expensive Lock Upgrades | Spend Right

Most of the money spent on door security in this country goes on the wrong things. Homeowners fit smart locks that cost four figures, leave the hinge side of the door untouched, and wonder why their insurance still asks questions. The two upgrades that would actually make a difference cost under £80 combined and barely anyone asks for them.

Let me explain why that is, and why it matters.

What burglars actually do to doors

Force entry through a door comes down to three methods. Snap the cylinder. Kick the lock side. Or, the one everyone forgets, lever the hinge side open far enough to pop the deadbolt out of the keep.

Method three works on a huge proportion of doors in RG40 and RG41. It works because hinge bolts, the simple steel pins that lock the hinge edge rigid when the door is closed, are missing from probably eight doors in ten I visit. They've been missing since the door was installed. Nobody ever asked for them, nobody ever offered them, and so they're not there.

A decent burglar doesn't need to snap your Ultion cylinder if he can just pull the hinge edge of your door towards him until the latch clears the frame. Takes seconds. Leaves no trace on the lock side at all.

The upgrade nobody fits: hinge bolts

Hinge bolts are two small steel pins, morticed into the door edge on the hinge side, that engage steel cups pressed into the frame. When the door is closed, you can't pull the hinge edge away from the frame regardless of how many hinges you remove or lever against. The door becomes a rigid unit.

Cost to supply and fit a pair: roughly £35 to £55 depending on the door material. Takes me about 45 minutes on a timber door, a little longer on uPVC because I'm working around the profile. Job done.

For that money you've closed the hinge-side attack entirely. Not reduced it. Closed it.

I've fitted them on houses in Emmbrook, on semis in Norreys, on end-of-terrace properties in Woosehill where the hinge side faces a side passage and is invisible from the street. Every one of those properties was previously wide open to a hinge-side attack that most homeowners had never heard of.

The upgrade nobody skips: anti-snap cylinders

To be fair, awareness of cylinder snapping has improved. Most people who call me now have at least heard of it. But there's still a gap between knowing you need a TS007 3-star cylinder and knowing which one to buy.

The market is flooded. Avocet ABS, Ultion, Mul-T-Lock, ERA Fortress, various Winkhaus options. Prices range from about £35 to £85 retail for the cylinder alone. The meaningful difference isn't usually the brand at the top end, it's whether the cylinder is correctly sized for your door.

A cylinder that protrudes more than 3mm beyond the face plate on either side can be gripped and snapped even if it's 3-star rated. The snap protection is in the sacrificial section behind the cam, but if the attacker gets purchase before that section, it doesn't matter how good the cylinder is. I remeasure every door before I order a cylinder. It sounds obvious. It isn't standard practice.

Fit a correctly sized Ultion or Avocet ABS in the right length, and snapping that cylinder becomes a realistic impossibility in the time a burglar wants to spend on your doorstep. That's what you're paying for.

Total cost including fitting: around £80 to £130. Done.

The upgrade everyone does: smart locks

Now let's talk about the thing that actually sells.

Smart locks are genuinely useful in specific situations. Landlords managing properties across Twyford and Bracknell who need to hand off access codes without cutting keys. Small office units on a trading estate where staff rotate and rekeying every three months gets expensive. Care settings. Short-term lets.

For the average homeowner in Wokingham, though, a £600 to £900 smart lock fits on top of a door that still has no hinge bolts and sometimes still has a 1-star cylinder in the euro profile below. It adds convenience and a feeling of security. It adds app notifications and a nice fingerprint reader. What it doesn't add is meaningful resistance to the two most common forced-entry methods.

Smart locks generally replace the lock body, not the cylinder. Some use their own proprietary cylinder, some retain the existing euro profile. What none of them do is fit hinge bolts. That's still a separate job, and it's still the job almost nobody books.

I've been called to properties in Earley and Finchampstead where a homeowner has spent £800 on a connected lock, and the door opens with moderate hinge-side pressure before I even need a tool. The smart lock performed perfectly. The door just wasn't secure.

The obvious objection

Someone always says: you're comparing physical security against the future. Smart locks do things a hinge bolt can't, like remote access, audit trails, no key to lose.

Fair. Those are real benefits and I'm not dismissing them.

But the question is whether you've secured the door first. A smart lock on an insecure door is a very expensive way to know exactly when your home was broken into. Hinge bolts and a correctly fitted 3-star cylinder are the foundation. Everything else, smart lock, alarm, video doorbell, is a layer on top of that foundation.

Skip the foundation and you're building on sand. That's not an opinion, it's just physics.

The honest caveat

There are doors where the geometry is bad and hinge bolts genuinely won't fit well. Old timber frames that have moved over decades, some composite door systems where the hinge side has no room for the bolt housing. In those cases I'll say so, and we'll look at other options, shoot bolts at the top and bottom, upgraded hinges with integral security pins, frame reinforcement.

And there are homeowners for whom a smart lock is genuinely the right call, usually because access management is the actual problem they're solving, not burglary risk. I'm not here to talk anyone out of a product that solves their real problem.

But if the goal is stopping a break-in, spend the £80 first. Then, if you want the smart lock on top, go ahead.

What I'd fit on my own door

A pair of hinge bolts. A correctly sized Ultion or Avocet ABS 3-star cylinder in the euro profile. A BS3621 five-lever mortice deadbolt on a timber door, or a multipoint lock with a PAS24 rating if it's uPVC or composite. A door chain or door limiter for when I'm home.

Total spend: somewhere between £150 and £280 depending on the door. That door is now genuinely hard to force without making a lot of noise and spending a lot of time on it. Both of those things deter the kind of burglar operating in RG40 and RG41, who is looking for a quick, quiet entry.

After all that? If I wanted a smart lock, I'd fit one. But not instead of the above. Never instead.
