A uPVC door on a 1990s semi in Emmbrook or Woosehill will typically outlast the mechanisms inside it by a decade or more. The frame is fine. The glass is fine. What fails is the multipoint gearbox and the cylinder, and those are cheap to fix. Yet every week someone calls me after a window company has quoted them a full door replacement for a problem that costs £80 to sort.

What a New uPVC Door Actually Costs
A mid-range uPVC door, supply and fit, runs from around £800 to £1,800 in the RG40 area depending on glazing, colour and the installer. A composite upgrade sits between £1,200 and £2,500. Neither price includes the cost of your time, the day you take off work to wait in, or the disruption to whatever else is happening that week.
That's the replacement baseline. Now look at what servicing costs.
What Fails on a uPVC Door and What It Costs to Fix
The gearbox (multipoint lock mechanism). This is the long strip running down the edge of the door, the part that shoots the bolts and hooks when you lift the handle. GU, Fuhr, Lockmaster, Maco, Roto, Winkhaus, Mila: these are the brands you'll find in doors across Crowthorne and Bracknell-era housing. A replacement gearbox costs £45 to £90 in parts; labour is usually an hour. Total: £120 to £180 fitted.
The cylinder. A euro cylinder on most uPVC doors is a 30-to-70 minute job to swap. A decent TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder, say an Ultion, Avocet ABS or Mul-T-Lock, costs £30 to £60 in parts. Fitted: £70 to £120.
The handle. Handle sets wear out, especially on doors used ten or twenty times a day. Budget £40 to £80 fitted.
The hinges. A door dropping on its hinges is often a hinge adjustment rather than a replacement. Thirty minutes, minimal cost. New hinges if needed: £60 to £100 fitted.

Even in the worst-case service scenario, you're saving £370 against a budget door replacement and over £1,100 against a composite. On a house in Norreys or Wescott where the frames are solid and the glazing is intact, there's almost never a financial case for full replacement unless you want a different style.
When Replacement Does Make Sense
I'll tell you when the maths shifts. If the frame itself is rotten or bowed, if the sealed glazing unit has failed and misted up, or if the door is a single-skin panel without a proper 5-lever BS3621 or multipoint BS8621 lock, then replacement is a real conversation. Security-wise, a door on an RG41 property that still has a single nightlatch and a rim lock is a problem no gearbox service will fix.
But if your door locks fine, looks fine, and the problem is a stiff handle or a dropped latch, you're not looking at a replacement job. You're looking at a one-hour call-out.
Where People Go Wrong
Window companies are not locksmiths. That's not a dig, it's just a fact. Their revenue model is new doors, not repairs. If you call a window company because your door won't lock, there's a reasonable chance you'll get a quote for a new door regardless of whether that's what the door needs.
A locksmith will diagnose the gearbox, tell you whether it's the cylinder binding or the mechanism worn, and give you a straight answer. Sometimes the answer is that the frame has dropped 15mm and no gearbox will fix that. But that's an honest conversation, not a default to the highest-ticket option.
Spending the Money Sensibly
If your uPVC door is five to eight years old and starting to play up, service it. New Ultion or Avocet ABS cylinder, replacement gearbox if the hooks and bolts are sluggish, handle if it's loose. You'll spend £250 to £350 and get another five to seven years from the door.
At the ten-year mark, if you've had one service and the frame is still square, do it again. The frame on most doors in Keephatch or Dowlesgreen from the late 1990s to 2010s builds is structurally sound. The mechanisms are consumables.
If you do reach the point where replacement makes sense, choose a door with a PAS24-rated lock set and a TS007 3-star cylinder as standard, not an upgrade. Most decent composite doors include this; cheaper uPVC ranges often don't.
